The differences between the 1985 program and the one available today as a result of budget constraints is amazing. The document has undergone numerous revisions, but this course has not. The 2014-2015 version of the Toolbook is the accepted form of the program. The 2014-2015 version (indicated below) is based upon the Guide to Learning Outcomes (GLO) approved by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on April 14, 2014.
First published in 1986 and revised over the years, teaching this toolbook has become an art in itself. However, the 2006 revision showed the little more than a token effort at communicating the rationale behind each exercise. In spring 2013, Tom took the tools to the next level, but I am still struggling with the decision to let him go because we disagree. In my opinion, he has reached the endpoint of the minor league toolbook. The difference between a man and a boy is the knowledge that a lesson has been learned. In Tom's case, there is no indication that he has learned any lesson. I am not a man, but I am pretty sure a man would have a different opinion about this.
This course is a series of interlocking objectives which will allow students to develop an original research project that reflects their deepest aesthetic interests and ethical commitments. Working closely with a faculty member and a small group of peers, students will develop projects that display rigorous literary scholarship and methodological inventiveness. The project will be grounded in research and presented with a clear connection to themes in the broad area of their studies. Specific theories and methods will be determined in consultation with the instructor. Students will be expected to engage in a rigorous development process that will culminate in the writing of an entire project. Prerequisite(s): One prior English course numbered in the 100s (excluding 101 or 150), plus one literature course at the 200- or 300- level.
