There are two main digital cinema standards. The first is from the U.S. Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which is based on the Digital Cinema Package (DCP) from the Digital Cinema Projection consortium, which is designed for digital cinema projection. DCP is based on the HDTVA's Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI). DCP supports up to 4096×2160 pixels at 60 Hz.[31] The DCP standard is suitable for digital projectors that are 3D capable, such as the Technicolor Dream Factory, and can be used in conjunction with RealD's 3D system , which uses a filter wheel. DCP is designed to be compatible with the HDTVA's standard, Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), which is based on ATSC and supports 2K film resolutions. [31]
As mentioned above, several digital cinema standards have been proposed and adopted by various countries. The choice of digital cinema standard is a complex one, primarily because movie studios and film distributors have a vested interest in the choice, as the selection of movie format determines how many times a movie can be screened, and the total lifetime of a movie. However, digital cinema standards also have to be practical for digital cinema projectors, and are also intended to be compatible with DLP projectors. As a result, the DCI and ATSC standards have established a protocol for transmitting digital cinema content, and the HDTV Association (HDTVA) has adopted ATSC as its standard for broadcasting digital cinema content.
Last year, images of digital cinema were projected in London, UK and the technology was viewed on a device which was sold at a premium. The use of digital cinema in the home is still a long way off. However, in the coming year or two, we can expect to see digital cinema become a viable alternative to traditional film projection in cinemas. It will be interesting to see how things develop.
We are entering a new era of projection. With digital cinema there are many new possibilities. For example, the new viewing technology that allows you to take your smartphone to a digital cinema, using a projector, is now in the realm of the possible. That is, if we can develop the technology that allows the projection of digital cinema into your home.
A benefit of digital cinema is the ability to show movies in the theater 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In an analog system, the film projector would have to be turned on to play a movie; in a digital system it may be turned on at any time, even while another movie is being played. Moreover, because the movie is digitally recorded, it does not have to be projected at its original release time and can be played at any later time without degrading the quality of the image. The quality of the image may even be improved by editing and changing the picture as it is being played, as is possible in editing stills. Digital cinema offers many possibilities for manipulation of the images in the theater. For example, it allows the removal of portions of an image as well as the addition of new images. The system also allows the addition of voice tracks for narration, creating a more immersive theater experience. 827ec27edc
